Bhubaneswar, June 29: The Government of Odisha has taken a major stride in digital governance by launching an advanced Safety Module on its Odisha Yatri platform, making it the first state in India to offer integrated mobility and citizen safety services through a single government-owned platform. Already a popular choice for everyday travel including auto-rickshaw and cab bookings, Ama Bus ticketing and boating services the application now functions as a comprehensive security ecosystem. By integrating directly with the Odisha Police and the national emergency response system, 112, the platform allows users to dispatch real-time, location-based alerts during critical situations.
During the launch event, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Women & Child Development, Mission Shakti and Tourism, Smt. Pravati Parida, reiterated that citizen safety remains a top priority for the administration. She emphasized that technology plays a crucial role in making public services more responsive, inclusive and accessible to every citizen. The newly introduced security features are designed to be highly intuitive, offering a One-Tap SOS function that instantly transmits live location data to law enforcement and pre-selected trusted contacts.
To ensure safety support is accessible even when a user cannot easily interact with their phone screen, the module introduces gesture-triggered activations. Android users can shake their devices to trigger an alert, while iPhone users can do so by tapping the back of their phones. The platform also includes real-time trip sharing with family, an emergency siren and ambient audio recording to document surroundings during a crisis. To maximize its reach and usability across the state, the module is fully functional in both Odia and English.
This update transitions Odisha Yatri from a standard transit application into a deeply citizen-centric digital platform. Moving forward, the state government envisions scaling the platform into India’s first state-owned Super App. Future expansions will continue to consolidate public services into this single ecosystem, with plans to integrate intercity bus networks, digital ticketing for major tourism destinations and a wider array of civic offerings to continuously improve the quality of life and public safety in Odisha.
