Tata Steel Meramandali Introduces EV Scrap Transfer Car at Conarc Furnace

Meramandali,  September 16, 2025: As part of itssustainable innovation and workplace safety journey, Tata Steel Meramandali has introduced a state-of-the-art Electric Vehicle-Scrap Transfer Car (EV-STC) at its Conarc furnace. A Conarc furnace is a type of steelmaking furnace that combines the features of an electric arc furnace (EAF) and a basic oxygen furnace (BOF). This pioneering deployment marks a transformative shift in scrap handling operations, replacing the conventional electric cable reeling mechanism and diesel-operated vehicle with a smarter, safer, and greener alternative.

Increasing scrap usage in the Conarc furnace (from 0.5% to 10%) will reduce 47 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, reinforcing Tata Steel’s commitment to reducing carbon footprint while saving on the energy costs.

The EV-STC is equipped with several enhanced safety features including anti-collision sensors to prevent collision with humans or moving machines, interlock of car movement with battery under charging, flashing beacon bar and announcement system at both ends. The system features a car stop mechanism with limit switches at both scrap loading and unloading points, providing an additional layer of protection in case of limit stop failure while ensuring that there is no power supply in the charging cable until it’s connected to the car for charging. The EV-STC has a payload capacity of 100 tonnes and operates at a speed of 25 to 30 meters per minute.

The deployment of the EV Scrap Transfer Car is a testament to how operational excellence and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, lowering emissions, and introducing silent, efficient scrap movement within the plant, this initiative is another step towards Tata Steel’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2045.
