Northern Odisha emerges as Industrial Powerhouse with TPNODL; 6,000+ Industries powered 112% growth in consumption

Balasore, September 17, 2025:

Reliable electricity supply is proving to be a game-changer for Northern Odisha’s industrial transformation. TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL), a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has significantly boosted confidence in the region’s manufacturing ecosystem by delivering uninterrupted power across five key districts. In just four years, TPNODL has empowered over 20 lakh consumers across nearly 28,000 square kilometres, laying the foundation for sustained industrial and economic growth.

The impact has been particularly profound in the industrial sector, where TPNODL now serves 5,830 industrial consumers, including 451 large industries and over 5,379 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These businesses are increasingly relying on stable power to expand operations, scale production, and enhance competitiveness.

Over the last four years, the region has witnessed a remarkable 112% increase in industrial power consumption, reaching 312.94 million units (MUs). The contracted demand has crossed over 1 Gigawatt (GW), with recent peak demand measurements indicating a surge up to 1.5 GW, reflecting the accelerating pace of industrialisation in Northern Odisha.

To support this growing demand, TPNODL has undertaken massive infrastructure upgrades across its operational areas. The company has developed 101.75 circuit kilometres (ckms.) of 33kV underground lines, including key stretches in industrial hubs such as Jajpur, Keonjhar, Joda, Bhadrak, and Balasore. Further, additional 26.3 ckms. of 11kV and 33kV lines are currently under construction, which will strengthen the power backbone for industries even more.

This expansion is backed by the installation of 274.85 ckms. of 33kV overhead lines and 631.33 ckms. of 11kV overhead lines across the region. Automation and resilience have been further enhanced through the deployment of 135 Ring Main Units (RMUs) and 103 auto-reclosers across TPNODL’s network. These upgrades ensure reliability, reduce downtime, and enable a proactive response to faults, critical to the smooth functioning of energy-intensive industries.

Stable and quality power has become the backbone of MSMEs in the region, enabling them to scale up production, generate employment, and contribute meaningfully to India’s goal of becoming an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). TPNODL’s reliable services are facilitating entrepreneurship, attracting fresh investments, and positioning Northern Odisha as an emerging industrial hub.

This progress is a shining example of how public-private partnerships in power distribution can catalyse inclusive economic development. TPNODL’s efforts not only support local industry but also offer a replicable model for India’s growing network of industrial corridors. As the nation advances its ambition to become a global manufacturing destination, Northern Odisha stands as proof of what focused infrastructure development can achieve.

“Reliable power is not just keeping the lights on, it’s powering new factories, generating livelihoods, and driving economic resilience,” said Gajanan Kale, CEO of TPNODL. “At TPNODL, we are committed to building a future-ready power infrastructure that enables industries to thrive and communities to prosper.”

Looking ahead, TPNODL aims to further accelerate infrastructure development, adopt smarter technologies, and deepen partnerships with industries to ensure that power supply remains not just reliable, but future ready. As Northern Odisha continues its rise as an industrial growth engine, TPNODL remains committed to being a central force in powering the region’s growth story reliably, sustainably, and at scale.
