BGU Hosts International Conference on Human Rights and Freedom of Expression

Bhubaneswar: Birla Global University (BGU), through its Birla School of Law, hosts a two-day International Conference on human rights and freedom of expression, focusing on emerging challenges in a technology-driven world.

The inaugural session featured Justice Dr. Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Member, National Human Rights Commission and former Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, as Chief Guest., Asim Amitabh Das, Former Member, Odisha Human Rights Commission, attended as Guest of Honour, while Prof. (Dr.) Rangin Pallab Tripathy, Registrar, National Law University Odisha, delivered the keynote address.

In his keynote, Prof. Tripathy highlighted that freedom of speech is fundamental to democracy but must be balanced with responsibility in the digital era. Das spoke on new-age human rights challenges arising from social media, artificial intelligence and environmental issues. Justice Sarangi emphasised the importance of awareness and institutional safeguards, stating that the exercise of one’s rights should not affect the rights of others.

(Dr.) Kulbhushan Balooni, Vice Chancellor, BGU, reaffirmed the university’s vision of nurturing responsible legal professionals and strengthening a just and equitable society.

Earlier, Prof. (Dr.) S.K. Nanda, Dean, Birla School of Law, welcomed the gathering, while Prof. (Dr.) B.K. Das, Registrar, BGU, outlined the conference objectives.

The conference continues with technical sessions and participation from academicians, researchers and students across the country.
