New Academic Year at IIT Bhubaneswar Kicks Off with Inspiring Welcome Events

Bhubaneswar, 3rd August 2024: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar has warmly welcomed its new batch of students. Separate orientation programs were held for students and parents of different courses, featuring an inspiring talk and the admission process for the academic year 2024-25.

During the orientations, Director Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar introduced the newcomers to the unique aspects of IIT Bhubaneswar. The 936-acre scenic campus, home to 50,000 deciduous trees, is the 3rd largest among the 23 IITs. Located at the base of the historic Barunei hillock, the campus is also significant for being the site of the 1817 Paikka Rebellion against the British. The administrative building features a dome with mismatched halves, symbolizing the institute’s acceptance of differences among people. Prof. Karmalkar highlighted the institute’s focus on entrepreneurship and producing quality teachers, with educators trained in active cooperative learning techniques. Deans and senior faculty members also briefed attendees on various academic and non-academic facilities, addressing any queries from students and parents.

A motivational talk by retired Commander V.K. Jaitly on “Shaping Your Future in the Next 4 Years at IIT Bhubaneswar” was held on 2nd August 2024, encouraging students to become game changers with dedication, determination, and discipline. Dr. Vijayakrishna Kari, Professor-in-Charge (Seminar), coordinated the event.

Admissions for various courses began on 9th July 2024, with Ph.D. student enrolments. A total of 451 students have joined B.Tech, 240 in MTech, 107 in MSc, 6 in MS by Research, and 115 in Ph.D. programs. This includes 3 international students under the ‘Study in India’ program. The institute has introduced new programs such as Engineering Physics, MTech in Semiconductor Technology and Chip Design, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, and a blended-mode MTech in Advanced Maintenance Technology. Additionally, 50 students are set to join the second batch of the 4-year Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP).
