Berhampur, March 2026: With summer approaching and electricity demand expected to rise significantly, TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) has stepped up its preparedness to ensure reliable power supply across its service areas. The company anticipates peak demand to reach around 855 MW and has rolled out a series of measures covering technology, infrastructure, and customer service to meet this demand efficiently.

At the core of TPSODL’s strategy is a strong, round-the-clock monitoring system. The company operates a Centralized Power System Control Centre (PSCC) in Berhampur, supported by decentralised Area Power System Control Centres (APSCCs) in Jeypore, Rayagada, and Phulbani. These centres are equipped with advanced SCADA systems that allow engineers to monitor the entire power distribution network in real time, including 33 kV feeders, Primary Substations (PSS), and 11 kV feeders.

This system captures critical operational data such as feeder-wise interruptions, helping teams quickly identify faults and restore supply faster. To further strengthen reliability, TPSODL also has a backup control centre at the TPCODL Technology Centre in Bhubaneswar, which ensures automatic failover and zero downtime during emergencies.

During the summer months, when electricity usage peaks, continuous monitoring becomes crucial. TPSODL has introduced dedicated dashboards at control centres to track feeder loading in real time. This helps PSCC Engineers take quick decisions and preventive actions to avoid overloading and maintain stable supply.

In case of power disruptions, especially when an 11 kV feeder trips, restoration work begins immediately . Using SCADA technology, control centre teams can remotely initiate trial charging while following strict safety protocols. This significantly reduces outage duration and improves overall service reliability.

On the infrastructure front, TPSODL has undertaken major upgrades to strengthen the network. The company has added 145.5 MVA capacity to its sub-transmission system through transformer and substation improvements. Additionally, 96 MVA capacity has been added to the distribution network by installing new distribution transformers and upgrading existing ones.

Network expansion has also been a key focus area. TPSODL has extended its network by 52.31 circuit kilometres (CKM) of sub-transmission lines, 145 CKM of 11 kV lines, and 1552 CKM of low-tension (LT) lines. At the same time, feeder augmentation and the installation of On-Load Tap Changers (OLTCs) have been carried out to maintain proper voltage levels even during peak demand.

To handle high load conditions effectively, TPSODL has institutionalised centralised control of 33 kV operations across substations. This is supported by contingency planning and dynamic load management systems, ensuring that the system can handle peak demand without the need for load curtailment.

The company has also embraced modern technology to improve maintenance. TPSODL is now using drone-based surveys for its 33 kV network. These drones capture high-resolution images, helping teams detect even small defects and overheating points that are not visible during manual inspections. This proactive approach reduces the chances of sudden outages.

In another major step, TPSODL has overhauled 40 high-capacity power transformers and installed 152 new Vacuum Circuit Breakers (VCBs). These upgrades are specifically aimed at preventing failures caused by extreme summer heat and ensuring stable power supply during high-demand periods.

On the consumer service side, TPSODL has strengthened its outreach and response systems. Consumers will receive outage updates in multiple languages through social media platforms. Call centre operations have been upgraded and SMS alerts and call-back options have been introduced to manage high volumes of consumer complaints more efficiently.

To ensure quick restoration of power, the company has deployed over 5,925 personnel across its operational areas. TPSODL has also focused on safety by carrying out preventive maintenance of primary feeders and refurbishing distribution substations to reduce the risk of faults during summer.

Speaking about the preparations, Mr. Amit Kumar Garg, CEO, TPSODL, said, “Ensuring reliable and quality power supply during the summer months is our top priority. With strengthened infrastructure, advanced monitoring systems, and a highly responsive workforce, TPSODL is fully prepared to meet the rising demand while enhancing service reliability and safety for our consumers.”

With these comprehensive measures in place, TPSODL aims to deliver uninterrupted, safe, and efficient power supply to consumers across Southern Odisha throughout the summer season.
