Jharsuguda: At the heart of the world’s largest aluminium plant, women professionals are confidently stepping into roles that were once considered to be off limits to them. In doing so, they are helping transform India’s manufacturing landscape in new, exciting ways. Vedanta Aluminium’s mega plant in Jharsuguda is home to hundreds of women professionals who are leading driving complex technical roles. Supported by a slew of initiatives geared to build a safe and supportive work environment, their growing presence in core industrial functions reflects the company’s commitment to inclusive operations.

For decades, roles in core operations within the mining and metals industries were largely considered a domain suitable only to male professionals, due to misconceptions regarding the work being physically demanding or too complex to be undertaken by women. However, women professionals at Vedanta Jharsuguda are taking charge of a diverse variety of roles, placing them at the forefront of an industry-wide transformation.

Vedanta Jharsuguda’s locomotive yard is one of the clearest examples of this shift. Here, locomotives are not merely for transporting materials but also to ensure seamless operations. Essential raw materials such as alumina must reach their destinations within the plant at the right time, while finished goods must be transported from loading points. At a plant from where aluminium products are supplied to customers in more than 60 countries, this activity is vital. An all-women locomotive team is now an integral part of this chain, navigating engines with precision, following strict safety protocols, coordinating across teams and executing tasks with the alertness the role demands.

The potline presents a different, but equally formidable, challenge. Vedanta Jharsuguda’s operations feature several potlines, which are long buildings within the smelter that contain a series of ‘pots’, or large electrolytic cells, within which aluminium production via smelting is carried out. It is a deeply technical environment where the process runs 24×7.

Operators must track every pot’s parameter diligently and respond quickly to any deviations to maintain stability. Now, the transition of one entire potline into an all-women‑managed operation marks a meaningful transformation at Jharsuguda.
Reflecting on the significance of these shifts, C Chandru, CEO – Vedanta Jharsuguda, says, “Progress is driven not only by technology and scale but also by the people who power our operations. At Vedanta Jharsuguda, we are actively building avenues for women professionals to take on critical roles in core operations. Through this effort, we reiterate our belief that access to opportunities must be defined by capability and commitment alone.

These change is not confined to a few departments alone. Across the plant, women are taking on larger responsibilities in both shop‑floor and leadership roles, representing the diverse nature of the plant’s workforce. Vedanta Jharsuguda has also extended its inclusion efforts to create opportunities for members of the transgender community in security and cast house operations. Most recently, the plant has also deployed an all-women power operations team to manage an entire 135 MW power plant, the first such team in Odisha.

As locomotives continue their steady journeys and potlines hum with energy across the plant, the women working in these spaces are doing more than performing technical functions. They are redefining the nature of opportunities and possibilities in industrial operations and in doing so, shaping a more inclusive future for the manufacturing sector.
