A Year of Stomach Pain: Laparoscopic Surgery Helps Man with Complex Pancreatic Condition

Bhubaneshwar, 24th June, 2025: 45-year-old Mr. Subhash [name changed] from Uttar Pradesh lived with recurrent abdominal pain and a sense of discomfort. It all began with a severe episode of necrotizing pancreatitis a year ago that was initially managed conservatively at a local hospital. But the aftermath left him with a persistent, ball-like structure in his pancreas. The cyst grew larger day by day, causing recurring pain and discomfort, along with decreased appetite. It reached a point where he couldn’t have a full meal anymore. His health and quality of life steadily declined. Even after consulting various doctors in different parts of India, there was no lasting relief.

That’s when he came to Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar and met Dr. Ramya Ranjan Behera, Consultant – General Surgery. During evaluation, there was a pancreatic pseudocyst (cyst filled with necrotic material in the pancreas) found along with multiple gall bladder stones. This is a common comorbidity in such cases. A clear, decisive surgical plan was needed to remove the gall bladder along with the necrotic materials of the cyst. Dr. Behera and his team took a combined laparoscopic approach, which involved the removal of the gall bladder, the necrotic material from the cyst, and a surgical connection to join the cyst to the stomach (a cystogastrostomy) to prevent further expansion of the cyst and relieve pain.

Dr. Ramya Ranjan Behera noted, “Traditionally, such a procedure is performed with a larger incision in the body, but here, it was done minimally invasively, requiring only 4 to 5 tiny cuts using laparoscopy. Laparoscopic surgery is a boon to patients like Subhash with complex gastrointestinal conditions as it is associated with less pain and faster recovery.”

Just 3 days after the successful surgery, Subhash was discharged with a sense of freedom from the burden of pain and ready to regain his health.

Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar has always prioritized delivering superior, personalized care. This case underscores the doctor’s abilities in managing high-risk pancreatic conditions through timely diagnosis and expert interdisciplinary coordination.
