Flood Alert in Odisha as River Levels Rise after Heavy Rain


Bhubaneswar: Due to continuous rainfall in Jharkhand and in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts, water levels in major rivers like Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, and Jalaka are rising steadily. A review by officials of Department of Water Resources held today.

At Rajghat, the Subarnarekha River has reached 8.41 meters, while the danger level is 10.36 meters. The Budhabalanga River stands at 6.94 meters at Govindpur, against its danger mark of 8.13 meters. However, the Jalaka River has already crossed its danger level, flowing at 6.65 meters at Mathani, where the danger mark is 6.50 meters.

According to forecasts, peak flood levels are expected to reach:

11.25 meters in Subarnarekha River at midnight tonight (29 June 2025)

8.20 meters in Budhabalanga River at 9:00 AM on 30 June 2025

6.82 meters in Jalaka River at 6:00 PM on 29 June 2025


The State Flood Cell under the Department of Water Resources is operating round the clock and monitoring the situation closely.

The Balasore District Collector has been asked to speed up evacuation and relief measures. Additionally, an Engineer-in-Chief and a Chief Engineer have been sent to Balasore to assess the ground situation and assist in flood management.
