Timely Payment of Electricity Due is Moral and Legal Responsibility of Consumers: TPWODL


Availability of electricity is considered one of the most essential for living. People need electricity power along with food, water, and oxygen. Therefore, TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL), the power distribution company in Western Odisha, has taken several steps to provide stable, uninterrupted, and quality service, as well as taken several initiatives and implemented payment facilities with state-of-the-art technology for the comfort and convenience of its millions of consumers while paying their monthly electricity bills. At the same time, the company is raising awareness among the consumers to pay electricity bills on time. It is worth mentioning that, in compliance with all the conditions of the BST and RST Rules 2024-25 issued by the Hon’ble OERC, various methods have been introduced by the distribution company for timely payment and collection of monthly electricity bills. Therefore, the company requests all its electricity customers to enjoy the discounts announced by the Hon’ble OERC by paying their monthly electricity bills and previous dues through online and offline modes.

Similarly, a special program, the ‘Pay and Win’ scheme, has been launched by the company to give a chance to win attractive gifts to the consumers those who pay their electricity bills on time. To encourage electricity consumers, this program was launched in August 2024 and has been running every month, where 3 lucky consumers from each sub-division of TPWODL can win attractive gifts by paying their electricity bills on time. By the end of February 2025, 1197 consumers have won prizes like smartphones, solar lamps, and digital radios.

For the month of March, the number of lucky winners has doubled, i.e., instead of 3 winners, 6 lucky winners from each sub-division of TPWODL can get a chance to win attractive gifts by paying their electricity bills on time. It is planned to give gifts to 342 electricity consumers for the month of March. Therefore, the company is requesting all its consumers to take advantage of this opportunity.

It is not out of place to mention here that, under sections 47 and 56 of the Electricity Act 2003, consumers are legally obligated to pay their electricity bill within the stipulated time frame. Falling which, the distribution company is empowered to restrict the electricity supply to the non-paying consumers. Therefore, it would not be wrong to say that the consumers are not only legally responsible but also morally responsible for nation building.

The distribution company purchases power from the state nodal agency and redistributes it among the consumers of different segments like domestic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural. The company also offers the subsidy to agriculture sectors and offers rebates as per the regulation from time to time.
